Factors Influencing Life Satisfaction among Community-dwelling Elders by Health Status
Kim Chun-Gill

Abstract
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the level of life satisfaction (LS) as well as identify factors influencing LS among the community-dwelling elders by health status.

Methods: A questionnaire survey was carried out using a convenience sampling method. The participants were 524 older persons; good health status (GHS, 183), poor health status (PHS, 341).

Results: The participants of the GHS group showed significantly higher levels for attitudes to aging, family support, economic status and LS compared to the PHS group. LS was positively correlated with the attitudes to aging and family support in both groups. The significant variables influencing LS were the attitudes to aging and family support in all groups. Gender influenced LS for the GHS group, and economic status influenced LS for the PHS group. These variables accounted for 40.0% of the total variance in the GHS group and 25.0% in the PHS group.

Conclusion: The results show that attitudes to aging and family support are important factors for LS among elders. Therefore, these variables should be carefully considered to increase LS for senior citizens. These findings can be utilized to support programs such as counseling and education of elders.
